The newest Gran Kriegel residential home project is in Shelter Island, NY, at the eastern end of Long Island. Designed by Gran Kriegel architects and designers and newly completed in 2020, this private home features three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large master walk-in closet, multiple porches, a pool, and outdoor shower. Gran Kriegel performed a program and feasibility study at SUNY New Paltz for the Old Main building. Old Main is the original campus building, completed in 1908 at what was then Teacher’s College. Plans assisted the 80,000 s.f. building in being totally renovated in response to building code, new program requirements and the need for general refurbishing including classrooms, library, lecture and cafeteria. Nine landmark warehouses were reconstructed and converted into 80 units of housing with ground floor retail space. The middle of certain buildings were demolished to provide for a common courtyard parallel to the length of the building. The hilltop site faces dramatic views of the Catskill Mountains to the west and the Berkshires to the east. The form of this house recalls the farm structures of the area skeletal sheds, vertical silos and voluminous barns. The renovation of this 1960s developers’ bungalow allows for spectacular views of the ocean to be seen from the living, dining and kitchen areas. This 2,000 sq. ft. residence is situated adjacent to a marsh on Eastern Long Island. The house is divided into two parts: a glass-enclosed living/dining volume with roof deck, and a two-story bedroom and circulation volume. Both are raised above the ground on pilings, which are expressed in the structural system throughout the house. The house utilizes natural, rustic materials in both the interior and exterior. The
