Construction has begun on our latest supportive housing project for Volunteers of America, with funding from the NYS Office of Mental Health. The Wales Ave. residence is a new 67-bed community residence consists of typical SRO units and two-bedroom apartments. The building will serve two populations, youths and adults with mental health needs. Given the occupants’ diverse characteristics and needs, strategic planning was employed to separate the two groups yet permit the economies of shared facilities. Common spaces include two multi-purpose/dining rooms which may be combined into one large room, a full working kitchen, laundries, lounges, offices and conference rooms for program directors and support staff as well as nurse’s offices. and nurses medication and counseling rooms. The construction is masonry bearing wall, clad with a brick veneer composed primarily of a blend of dark ironspot brick and areas of glazed brick.
